Who Are the Peer Helpers?

We are an organization of Peers who have made a commitment to our school and communities that we live in.  The Peer Helpers do a number of things.  We help people when they need it.  We do tutoring for whoever needs it.  We also help with any personal problems a person may be experiencing.  For example:  with friends, and family with teachers/classes, attendance/tardy problems, drugs/alcohol, suicide, runaways and abuse (verbal and physical).

We offer support for any of the problems that were listed above. We will listen, but we will not judge.  One important  things is that we will NOT give advice.  We will try to help the person to find a solution to his/her individual problem.  If we cannot help you we will find someone who can.

Students who seek the help of a Peer Helper can trust that their issues and conversations will remain private and confidential.  We will not tell family, friends, teachers, principal, etc...  There are exceptions, which are: Legal matter anything illegal, suicide, abuse, and runaways.  These problems will be considered "over our heads."  We will help in anyway  that we can, however we also must get help from adults that are trained to help.  One thing we are not is as counselor.  Peer Helpers can be a friend.  We are here to help your high school years be worry free!  To visit the National Peer Helper Association website go to www.peerhelping.org

How Do You Become a Peer Helper?

Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors who are interested in becoming a Peer Helper submit and application and five references. Candidates then attend an interview.  Once these applicants are selected, they attend a two-day, one night, retreat to receive training by Carl Graver, the director of the Pennsylvania Peer Helper Associates.  One of the things you must do to be a Peer Helper is stay Alcohol and Drug free!
